SUMMARY:Banned Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the Paulding County Democrats for the monthly meeting of our Banned Book Club. We have expanded the definition of our club to include political books. Let’s explore the stories challenged and understand the importance of freedom of expression.  Sign up here:  https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/911831/. \nIn March\, we are reading “Giving Up Is Unforgivable\,” by Joyce Vance. \n“We’re in this together.” \nFor the past several years\, Joyce Vance has signed off posts on her chart-topping Substack\, “Civil Discourse”\, with these four words. In that time\, she has guided readers through a continued erosion of democratic norms\, the unprecedented felony conviction of an ex-president\, and the constitutionally calamitous beginning to the second Trump administration. Here\, Vance offers a blueprint for avoiding burnout and despair\, and for strengthening our democratic muscle. \n“Giving Up Is Unforgivable” is a clarion call to action\, putting our current crisis in historical context and sketching out a vision for where we go next. Vance’s message is hopeful at its heart\, even as it acknowledges the daunting challenges that lie ahead. She is the constitutional law professor you never knew you needed\, explaining the legal context and the political history— and why the rule of the law still matters. At the same time\, she empowers the reader to do something\, both as individuals and collectively. \nConsider this the birth of a countermovement to Project 2025\, a rallying cry for citizen engagement to combat the second Trump administration and save American democracy. \nPlease purchase and read the book ahead of time. \nCoffee and soft drinks will be provided. Please bring a snack to share. \nThe meeting is at a private residence off Dabbs Bridge Road in Dallas. The address will be provided upon registration. \nLet’s stand together for the freedom to read and share ideas!

SUMMARY:Banned Book Club\, "The Bluest Eye"
DESCRIPTION:Event is hosted at a private residence. Please register on Mobilize (https://mobilize.us/s/URVld1) for address.\nJoin the Paulding County Democrats for the monthly meeting of our Banned Book Club. We have expanded the definition of our club to include political books. Let’s explore the stories challenged and understand the importance of freedom of expression. \nOur January book selection is “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison. \nIn Morrison’s acclaimed first novel\, Pecola Breedlove—an 11-year-old Black girl in an America whose love for its blond\, blue-eyed children can devastate all others—prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful\, so that people will look at her\, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning\, and the tragedy of its fulfillment. \nSince its publication\, the book has consistently landed on the American Library Association’s list of most challenged books. Reasons cited have included\, “sexually explicit material\,” “lots of graphic descriptions and lots of disturbing language\,” and “an underlying socialist-communist agenda.” \nThe Bluest Eye remains one of Toni Morrison’s most powerful\, unforgettable novels—and a significant work of American fiction. \nPlease\, read the book before the meeting. \nCoffee and soft drinks will be provided. Please bring a snack to share. \nLet’s stand together for the freedom to read and share ideas!

SUMMARY:Banned Book Club\, ‘Allow Me to Retort’
DESCRIPTION:RSVP on Mobilize for address: https://mobilize.us/s/NTKG0A \nJoin the Paulding County Democrats for the monthly meeting of our Banned Book Club. We have expanded the definition of our club to include political books. Let’s explore the stories challenged and understand the importance of freedom of expression. \nOur November book selection is “Allow Me to Retort: A Black Guy’s Guide to the Constitution” by Elie Mystal. Allow Me to Retort is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have\, what rights Republicans are trying to take away\, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering\, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind\, and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past. \nMystal brings his trademark humor\, expertise\, and rhetorical flair to explain concepts like substantive due process and the right for the LGBTQ community to buy a cake\, and to arm readers with the knowledge to defend themselves against conservatives who want everybody to live under the yoke of eighteenth-century white men. The same tactics Mystal uses to defend the idea of a fair and equal society on MSNBC and CNN are in this book\, for anybody who wants to deploy them on social media. \nYou don’t need to be a legal scholar to understand your own rights. You don’t need to accept the “whites only” theory of equality pushed by conservative judges. You can read this book to understand that the Constitution is trash\, but doesn’t have to be.

SUMMARY:Banned Book Club - 1984
DESCRIPTION:Register on Mobilize: https://mobilize.us/s/XNV4j5 (This event will be held at a private residence. Location will be provided through Mobilize.) \nJoin the Paulding County Democrats for the monthly meeting of our Banned Book Club. We have expanded the definition of our club to include political books. Let’s explore the stories challenged and understand the importance of freedom of expression. \nOur September book selection will be the classic “1984.” Written 75 years ago\, 1984 was George Orwell’s chilling prophecy about the future. And while 1984 has come and gone\, his dystopian vision of a government that will do anything to control the narrative is timelier than ever… \n“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final\, most essential command.” \nA startling and haunting novel\, 1984 creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations\, or the power of its admonitions—a power that seems to grow\, not lessen\, with the passage of time. \nPlease purchase and read the book before the meeting. \nCoffee and soft drinks will be provided. Please bring a snack to share. 1980s style food is encouraged! \nLet’s stand together for the freedom to read and share ideas!
