DESCRIPTION:Join the Paulding County Democrats for the monthly meeting of our Banned Book Club. We have expanded the definition of our club to include political books. Let’s explore the stories challenged and understand the importance of freedom of expression. \nIn April\, we are reading “The Catcher in the Rye\,” by J.D. Salinger. This 1951 novel has a long history of being banned. According to Time\, “The Catcher in the Rye” was the most challenged book in the United States from 1961 to 1982. There was a resurgence of challenges in 2005 and 2009. The American Library Association states that “The Catcher in the Rye” has been banned by schools and public libraries for having “excess vulgar language\, sexual scenes\, things concerning moral issues\, excessive violence and anything dealing with the occult” and “communism\,” among other things. \nPlease purchase and read the book ahead of time. \nRefreshments will be provided. \nThe meeting is at a private residence off Bill Carruth Parkway in Hiram. In that time\, she has guided readers through a continued erosion of democratic norms\, the unprecedented felony conviction of an ex-president\, and the constitutionally calamitous beginning to the second Trump administration. Here\, Vance offers a blueprint for avoiding burnout and despair\, and for strengthening our democratic muscle. \n“Giving Up Is Unforgivable” is a clarion call to action\, putting our current crisis in historical context and sketching out a vision for where we go next. Vance’s message is hopeful at its heart\, even as it acknowledges the daunting challenges that lie ahead. She is the constitutional law professor you never knew you needed\, explaining the legal context and the political history— and why the rule of the law still matters. At the same time\, she empowers the reader to do something\, both as individuals and collectively. \nConsider this the birth of a countermovement to Project 2025\, a rallying cry for citizen engagement to combat the second Trump administration and save American democracy. \nPlease purchase and read the book ahead of time. \nCoffee and soft drinks will be provided. We are contacting Democratic voters who need a reminder to show up for the runoff. \nPaulding Democrats will be knocking doors and delivering campaign flyers throughout the county. Door-to-door canvassing is the most effective way to get the word out about this election and to get voters to the polls. \nIf you haven’t canvassed before\, it’s fun! Get to know your neighbors and remind them how important their vote is. \nPlease wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Wear your Shawn Harris t-shirt\, or we will give you one. \nWe will meet in the parking lot behind McDonald’s and carpool to the canvassing location.
